I know that many of you if not all of you already know by now
that my younger brother Nicholas has been called to Kuwait an Iraq and is now
one of the soldiers fighting this war that began last night! My family
and I have needless to say had a very difficult time knowing the danger
he is in and the sacrifice he and his fellow soldiers are making for us
as Americans and for the people world wide! I know many of you are
conflicted by your feelings about whether or not we should fight this
war. I, like many of you have been glued to my television set day
and night trying to find even one small glance of what are men and women
serving in the military are facing, somehow feeling like if I watch it I
am with them, if not physically than in mind and in spirit!
I have also seen many of my fellow Americans
and people around the world protesting this war and what it stands for,
calling the men who lead us that we have voted into office war mongers.
While I watch these it breaks my heart! I like many have debated in my
own mind our stand on all of this, so I know how you all feel. But
although you have the right to say how you feel and your views whether
it be in front of an international audience or in the privacy of your home,
the people who are fighting this war are the same people and from the
same family of military personnel who gave us that freedom and fight for
us to keep it. I know you feel by speaking your mind you may be
able to change something, but the truth is it will not change and we
will not back down from our position in Iraq and Afghanistan. This
is the time, that despite how you may feel about our leaders, our
military, and our position that our brothers, sisters, husbands, wives,
sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, nieces, nephews, and other family
members and friends that are over their fighting for us, in some
unfortunate cases giving their lives to protect what America stands for
and the freedom we love. We are trying to give a chance to a
scared and tortured society to escape the real war monger and stand tall
without fear and to live in peace. You people protesting for peace
are only protesting for peace in this country. Iraq and
Afghanistan have had no peace for years. We are trying to give it
to them.
And I'm sorry, but I have begun
to feel like many of the people around the world, especially in this
country have forgotten the pain and fear that we all lived less than two
years ago. I remember September 11, 2001 like it was yesterday! It
was my birthday and I awoke to a international broadcast of the worst
act of violence in our own back yard in decades maybe even centuries.
I watched live on television along with many of you as those planes hit
those magnificent towers in New York, I watched them burn and fall and
my heart fell with them. Take a moment if you will to think back
with me! Remember the tears and wounds of the people who managed to
escape with their lives, remember the hysterical pleas by family and
friends of those who who were searching desperately for their loved
ones, trying to explain to their children why their mom or dad wouldn't
be coming home ever again. Remember the panic in the streets and
the children covered in blood and tears, remember the huge gash in our
pentagon as well as our pride and sense of security. Remember the
heroes of the flight that burned in a cornfield to save us from yet
another attack in Pennsylvania. Remember the families that never
got a chance to say good bye to the people they loved the most! Now
imagine that happening again, with someone you love caught in the
crossfire unexpectedly! Imagine the pain and frustration and loss you
yourself would feel. And when you ask yourself and others why we
are fighting this war, you will know why. Remember that my
brother, and many others, are putting their lives on the line so you and
your loved ones will never know how that felt to those who lost people
on 9-11. They are all heroes and deserve to be treated as such!
Not questioned by people who have simply forgotten that day and lost
sight of the possibility that it could happen again. Within
the days after 9-11 I remember how we all came together as we
mourned and cried over what happened, how we all hung flags and there
were very few people that didn't have one hanging from their home or
car. I ask of all of you that you do that again. Come
together as we did those days and hang our flags proudly, pray for our
soldiers safe returns, and help the families of these soldiers get
through these difficult times! Let the men and women of our armed forces
as well as those fighting with us from other countries that they are
loved, and missed and most of all supported!
Please!!
Thank you allfor taking the time to read this letter!
